Behind-the-Meter Solar Option

Installing solar outside of TVA’s programs can be a viable option for some businesses and organizations.  For solar systems that are installed “behind-the-meter,” 100% of the solar electricity is used on-site with little or no electricity flowing onto the grid.  Therefore, the best candidate for a behind-the-meter system is an entity that will consume at least as much energy as their solar system will generate and operates 7 days per week and during the sunniest part of the day.

Similar to net-metering, behind-the-meter installations provide one-to-one cost savings. For example, if you pay 7 cents per kWh for your electricity, the solar is worth 7 cents per kWh – as long as you can use it at the time of generation (otherwise, you would be feeding the grid for free).  As electric rates increase, the solar becomes that much more valuable since it keeps up with inflation. This continues as long as the system is operational, which is longer than the 20 year term of TVA’s program contracts.

Additionally, system owners keep the Environmental Attributes of the system which are expected to increase in value.  For projects in a TVA program, TVA owns the attributes.

If you think you might be a candidate for going solar behind-the-meter, please contact us to discuss your project.
