Steve Johnson is the President and Founder of LightWave Solar Electric LLC. He is a NABCEP Certified Solar PV Installer and has been in the electrical construction business for over 30 years with experience in solar PV dating back to 1998. He holds the second NABCEP certification in the State of Tennessee as well as an unlimited Tennessee Electrical Contractors License including a Solar Panel Installation designation. Steve has worked closely with TVA on the development of the Generation Partners program and is responsible for the design and installation of the systems at Oak Ridge National Laboratories, designs for the Tennessee National Guard Armory, dozens of businesses and residences around the state, and the first solar interconnections with 19 electrical distributors and several municipalities. He is the 2007 recipient of the Tennessee Million Solar Roofs "Solar Star" award for contributions in the solar electrical field in Tennessee. Most recently, Steve was elected to the board of TenneSEIA, where he serves on the policy committee. Steve lives in Cane Ridge with his wife, Carla, and their two teenagers and plays around with solar golf carts for fun.
LightWave Solar and BB&T will host two Commercial Solar Lunch and Learn events to explain the financial incentives for commercial solar installations, including the 30% Investment Tax Credit, MACRS Accelerated Depreciation and TVA’s solar incentive program. Presentation will also include an overview of an attractive financing option through BB&T. Join us on either date to learn how solar investments make sense for businesses!
Congratulations to John Robinson, Matt Pelerossi and Daniel Hodge for earning their NABCEP PV Certifications!
Matt and Daniel earned the PV Installation Certification, and John earned the PV Technical Sales Certification. LightWave Solar now employs 11 full NABCEP certificate holders, more than any solar company in Tennessee.
NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) is the gold standard for third-party solar certification, and full certification means passing a rigorous exam and meeting quality training and experience requirements. We already knew John, Matt and Daniel were great assets to LightWave Solar, but now potential customers, colleagues and other solar professionals will know too.

The graph below shows the amount of solar installed in TVA’s residential and small commercial solar program, Green Power Providers, since 2009. You can see that solar installs have been falling since 2012 and only 1.5 MW of solar was installed in the first half of this year!
Solar installations sky rocketed in 2011, and TVA began cutting back the program. The market withstood the drops in the incentive payments since solar costs were falling significantly as well. However, system size limits and program caps have resulted in a program that undercuts the solar market.
Long story short: The demand for solar is higher than TVA’s 10 MW cap, and the extremely low cap has nearly killed the region’s solar industry. Though capacity is set at 10 MW, it is highly unlikely that 10 MW will actually be built in 2014 due to TVA’s approval process. We estimate 5-6 MW of solar will be installed in 2014.
As solar continues to grow nationally, as peer utilities set much bigger solar goals, and with solar prices at their lowest, TVA should double or triple solar program capacity, or get rid of the stifling cap altogether. If you would like to help, you can email the TVA board members at firstname.lastname@example.org. Feel free to include the graph above and let them know you would like to see more solar installed in the Valley.
